1. Plate material: ceramic vs. titanium vs. tourmaline
Ceramic plates heat evenly and are gentler on hair — a solid default for most hair types, especially fine or color-treated hair.
Titanium plates heat up faster and hold higher temperatures, which suits thick, coarse, or very curly hair that needs more heat to straighten in one pass.
Tourmaline-infused plates add a smoothing, anti-frizz coating on top of ceramic or titanium — useful in humid weather, which is most of the year in coastal cities like Karachi.
If you're not sure, ceramic is the safer starting point. Move to titanium only if ceramic isn't cutting through your hair's natural texture in one or two passes.
2. Temperature range and control
Fine or damaged hair should stay under 350°F (177°C). Normal to thick hair can handle 350–400°F. Very coarse or resistant hair sometimes needs up to 450°F. A straightener with adjustable temperature settings — rather than one fixed heat — lets you dial this in instead of guessing.
3. Plate width
Narrow plates (0.5″–1″): better for short hair, bangs, and precise styling, but slower for long hair.
Wide plates (1.5″+): faster for long or thick hair since you cover more hair per pass, but less precise for shorter styles.
4. Cord and swivel
A 360° swivel cord matters more than it sounds like — it prevents the cord from twisting and fraying with repeated use, one of the most common ways cheap straighteners fail early.
5. Safety features worth having
- Auto shut-off after 30–60 minutes of inactivity
- A heat-resistant storage pouch or lock function, especially useful for travel
